Eden / History

Eden started shortly after I discovered Plants for a Future and noticed that the dataset was being distributed under a *free* license. I downloaded the archive and wrote this little script that allowed stand-alone use on my machine. This worked better for me than the existing PFAF search engine, mostly because I could just feed it sql when I wanted to look for something specific. Of course I wanted to improve it and wrote another more sophisticated version in python as well as making a lot of structural changes to the database itself. I called this Permaculture Plant Database (PCPDB) and it was hosted on the Sandhill Farm website for over six months. PCPDB featured a fairly sophisticated search engine with a well developed controlled vocabulary that produced meaningful results for complex search strings such as "a fast growing shade tolerant vine hardy to zone 5", which yielded results like Virginia Creeper, a vine that actually grows locally in that microclimate. Eden is based on the PCPDB code and modified PFAF dataset.
